apache2 on linux

some notes for installing and setting up apache2

install apache2 and if wanted apache2-doc via sudo apt-get install or the synaptic package manager

for configuring the apache server two files are of relevance:
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf, /etc/apache2/ports.conf
if you want to restrict access to the local system change the line in /etc/apache2/ports.conf to

a testpage is already stored in the folder /var/www/, so if you open your browser and go to http://localhost you should see it now.

to enable the module for userdirs you have to
# activate mod_userdir
sudo a2enmod userdir
# create a folder named public_html in the user’s home folder
mkdir /home/user/public_html
# restart the service
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
# although the parameter reload should do it too

a new group was added named www-data, to add a user to this group
sudo adduser username www-data

enabling PHP4 or PHP5 is done via sudo a2enmod php4, .... php5 respectively
